After traveling across nearly 70 countries, our Budget Tour series has reached an ambitious milestone: Season 12. Unlike the shorter trips of earlier seasons, this journey spans 44 days and dives into one of the most intriguing yet lesser-explored regions of the world โ Central Asia.
The highlight this time? A long-awaited trip to Afghanistan โ our 69th country in this travel series. Along with it, we are also stepping into Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Together, they form the heart of the Silk Road, brimming with history, landscapes, and unique cultures.
๐ซ The Departure
This adventure officially began from Cochin International Airport, Kerala. After taking a train journey south from Tamil Nadu, we caught a flight from Kochi to Sharjah (UAE), and then onward to Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan.
Unlike our usual departures from Coimbatore or Mumbai, this time starting from Kochi itself added a new flavor. Passing through Sharjah also reminded us of how important Middle Eastern hubs are for connections into Central Asia.
๐ฆ๐ซ Afghanistan: The Hero of Season 12
For years, Afghanistan has been painted only as a โwar-torn, unsafe country.โ But hidden beneath this narrative lies a land of mountains, kindness, and golden-hearted people.
Arrival in Kabul
Landing in Kabul brought a mix of emotions: excitement to step into a historic nation, yet nervousness because of its reputation. Immigration however was smoother than expected: visas checked, documents verified, questions asked โ and with everything in order, we were welcomed into the country.
Stepping outside Kabul airport, the first impressions were genuine:
- Dusty streets and busy traffic,
- People curious but friendly,
- Private taxis negotiating fares,
- And the Afghan currency,ย Afghani, being exchanged almost everywhere.
First Night in Afghanistan
Instead of expensive hotels, we chose to stay in a local hostel โ a simple guesthouse with basic facilities but plenty of warmth. Hospitality in Afghanistan is unique. Locals may not have much, yet they share generously.
The evening was about settling in: sipping Afghan tea, meeting fellow travelers (rare to find here), and absorbing the atmosphere of a city that has seen so much history yet keeps moving forward.
๐บ๏ธ Other Central Asia Plans
While Afghanistan was the hero destination, the journey also extended into Central Asiaโs โStanโ countries:
- Kyrgyzstanย โ famous for its alpine lakes, nomadic culture, and endless mountains.
- Uzbekistanย โ home to Silk Road gems like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Tashkent.
- Turkmenistanย โ the mysterious desert nation with unique Soviet-influenced architecture and the โGates of Hellโ gas crater.
Together, these countries offer a taste of history, religion, landscapes, and resilience.
๐ Visa & Entry
Travel in this region requires careful visa planning:
- Afghanistan: Visa is not available online; it must be obtained through the Afghan embassy inย New Delhi or Mumbai. Supporting documents like invitation letters are often required.
- Uzbekistan & Kyrgyzstan: Easier, as both offerย e-Visa or visa-free entryย for travelers with certain visas (like US/Schengen).
- Turkmenistan: Still among the toughest visas in the world, usually only issued with government-approved tour packages.
Despite the fear and difficulty, once you have the right visas, entry and immigration are manageable.
๐ธ Expenses & Budget
Keeping in sync with our Budget Tour style, here is an approximate breakdown:
- Flights: Cochin โ Sharjah โ Kabul (round trip with connections) ~ โน20,000.
- Visa Costs: Afghanistan ~โน8,000; others varied between โน3,000โโน5,000 depending on type.
- Stay: Hostels/guesthouses in Kabul and Central Asia โ โน700โโน1200 per night.
- Food: Bread, kebabs, rice dishes, chai โ daily costs ~โน500โโน800.
- Transport: Shared taxis, local buses, occasional domestic flights โ ~โน1,000/day average.
Estimated total for 44 days: around โน1.8 โ โน2.2 lakh for one traveler.
โ ๏ธ Safety & Reality Check
One of the biggest questions everyone asks is: โIs it safe to visit Afghanistan?โ
Yes, the country has seen decades of turmoil. But hereโs the truth:
- Ordinaryย Afghan people are warm, kind, and welcoming.
- Hospitality is part of their culture โ they often treat guests like family.
- Solo traveling requires caution, but being respectful, dressing modestly, and avoiding sensitive topics help.
- The biggest challenge is not danger from people, butย logistics, infrastructure, and restrictions on filming/photography.
Travelers should always stay updated about the political situation before planning a trip.
โจ Highlights of Season 12
- First footsteps inย Afghanistan, ourย 69th country.

๐ Conclusion
Budget Tour Season 12 is unlike any other. It is not just about visiting tourist sights, but about challenging perceptions. Many imagine Afghanistan only as a place of fear โ yet, walking through the streets of Kabul, sipping tea with strangers, spending nights in simple hostels proved otherwise.
This trip reminded us that beyond wars and politics, people remain the true beauty of a nation. The Afghans, with their warm smiles and simple lifestyles, made us feel at home thousands of kilometers away.
With Central Asia ahead โ Kyrgyz mountains, Uzbek Silk Road cities, and Turkmen mysteries โ Season 12 is set to be unforgettable.
